Can QuickTime X Play AVI, WMV, FLV, MKV, DivX in Sierra/El Capitan/Yosemite/Mavericks?

After upgrading to macOS Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite or Mavericks, the Quick Look function to preview a movie file in thumbnail won’t work any more for files with extension of .avi, .wmv, .flv,. .mkv, .divx. When attempting to preview such movie files with Quick Look, it shows an empty document with zero KB in size. When double-clicking on the movie files, it opens in QuickTime Player X but then immediately converts with conversion process never finished even you wait for 24 hours. Can iTunes Play FLAC?

Have problems of add and import FLAC to iTunes? You may ask that can iTunes play FLAC? I have lots of FLAC files and want to get them to iTunes, so that I can transfer FLAC to play on my iPhone, iPod and iPad and use iTunes match to backup to iCloud. It’s really frustrated that iTunes can’t read and open FLAC files.

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec), is a codec for lossless compression of digital audio. Digital audio compressed by FLAC’s algorithm can typically be reduced to 50–60% of its original size[4] and decompressed to an identical copy of the original audio data. Though playback support for FLAC by portable audio devices and dedicated audio systems is limited compared to lossy formats such as MP3, FLAC is supported by more hardware devices than competing lossless compressed formats such as WavPack.

Unfortunately, FLAC format is not a supported format by Apple’s software and devices, like iTunes, QuickTime, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Apple TV.

How to Play Blu-Ray Disc Movies in OS X Mavericks?

Does OS X Mavericks Support Blu-Ray Playback?

OS X Mavericks, the newest Mac OS X system, brings more than 200 new features including improved multiple display support, mission Control, Finder, iBooks, Calendar, Maps, and a number of other time-saving enhancements.

In video playback, OS X Mavericks improves the energy efficiency of iTunes HD video playback. The video playback engine takes greater advantage of the efficient graphics hardware in your Mac and reduces the frequency of disk access. It’s a pity that OS X Mavericks still does not bring Blu-Ray playback. So users still cannot play Blu-Ray with iTunes or QuickTime on Mac OS X 10.9. However, if you have an external Blu-Ray drive, you can play Blu-Ray movies on OS X Mavericks with the help of Blu Ray Player for Mavericks.

Problem

After upgrading Mountain Lion, you might find odd problems such as Safari crashing, or the system not showing the appropriate cursor at times, either in Safari or in other programs like Microsoft Office. When you might expect to see the standard arrow as the mouse pointer, the cursor will instead look like a crosshair or another alternate cursor.

Reason

This problem is not widespread by any means, and seems to be rooted around the user installing an incompatible Adobe PDF viewer Web browser plug-in.

Since Safari provides built-in PDF compatibility, for most people there has been no real need for an alternative PDF viewer plug-in. If you do need an alternative, though, then Adobe does offer a compatible plug-in with its latest Adobe Reader for OS X; however, those who have older versions of Adobe’s CS suite or Acrobat Pro program may inadvertently install the plug-in when either repairing their current installation or reinstalling the program from scratch, steps that might commonly be done after upgrading OS X.

Users with such configurations have reported black browser screens when viewing PDF files, and in Mountain Lion have more recently seen odd cursor problems and browser crashes, and uninstalling the plug-in has resulted in these problems going away.

The Issue

With the release of Mountain Lion, many OS X 10.8 Lion users only to find that when they play MKV, AVI, MP4 or any video files with AC3 stereo audio, AC3 5.1 surround with Perian Player, no sound is played, only the video portion is played.

Interesting thing is if you convert the MKV, AVI to MP4 or M4V and passthrough the AC3-audio, the QuickTime 7 can play the file fine.

In fact, it is not strange at all if you get to know that Dolby Digital audio AC3 is a paid audio codec. QuickTime has got an ac-3 decoder from Apple, but other apps like VLC, Perian can’t use the AC3 codec due to copyright issue.
